Ominous Beauty

Tatianna Cwick

United States USA, age 17

Tatianna says, "I think this captures the essence of the planet Venus, with its threatening volcanic environment and unique splendor.  When researching for this rendering, I found many interesting previous spacecraft views of what Venus looked like and I selected a few of the prominent landscape features to include in it.  Overall, I believe my choice of using watercolors portrays the realism and mystique of Venus that I was attempting to show.

"My father taught me most of what I know about the planets and the solar system.  He inspired me to enter this contest, and I have him to thank for this award.  Of course, without both of my parents' support, I would have never been able to achieve this.  When my Dad first told me about the contest, I remember he said that this could combine both of our interests; his love for space and my love for art.  Growing up, he used to drag my sister and I to all kinds of space exhibitions, and as much as I dreaded them at the time, I now appreciate his sparking my interest in planetary exploration.

"I consider myself an average teenage American girl, and I enjoy art, fashion, dance, and hanging out with my friends.  Currently I attend high school in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and plan to attend a four-year college next fall majoring in art.  My love for art and space have finally coincided in this competition, and I hope it will further my experience as an aspiring art student."
